Introduction to the Medical Laboratory and Phlebotomy

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to

explain the general ethical and legal responsibilities and proper conduct for laboratory professionals and practice these principles.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to

describe the hospital and its departments and their relationship to the clinical laboratory.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to

identify and describe the different types of hospital patient care areas and the responsibilities required of the phlebotomist in each area.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to

identify common laboratory tests and distinguish their unique characteristics with respect to patient preparation, anticoagulant of choice, specimen collection, and laboratory section using the specimen.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to

describe and follow laboratory safety precautions and OSHA regulations.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to

discuss quality assurance used in blood specimen collection techniques.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to

describe the personnel structure, clinical laboratory sections and responsibilities, and the general responsibilities of the various laboratory workers.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to

discuss and practice effective communication in the healthcare environment.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to

describe proper collection techniques, including routine venipuncture, dermal micropuncture, and butterfly draws
