Fundamentals of Clinical Chemistry

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to

explain the principle of the following laboratory methods: spectrophotometry, potentiometry, electrophoresis, osmometry, and coulometry.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to

perform all basic chemistry laboratory computations correctly.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to

explain the principles of enzyme kinetics and the factors that affect enzymatic procedures and describe the principles of common enzyme assays.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to

describe common disease states assessed in the clinical laboratory, such as those associated with cardiac enzymes and glucose concentrations, and correlate results to disease states.

identify commonly measured trace elements, proteins, non-protein nitrogenous compounds, electrolytes, and enzymes, review their origin, function, and regulation, review conditions associated with their abnormal concentrations, and describe the analysis of each.

apply principles of quality assurance and quality control including proper patient identification, identifying quality specimens, and evaluating quality control data.
