Program Information/Mission

The mission of the Medical Laboratory Technician program is to provide current curriculum and clinical learning experiences, to develop students' knowledge, skills, and professional behaviors, and to prepare graduates for entry level practice in each major discipline in a clinical laboratory.

Graduates are eligible to take the examination for certification as a medical laboratory technician (MLT) given by the Board of Certification (BOC) of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

For students seeking to complete a university Medical Laboratory Science program, special opportunities may exist for students who have completed an accredited MLT program. It is highly recommended students reach out to the program director for information on MLT/MLS articulation and curriculum planning.

Admission to Program

Admission requirement: 

  • Current high school junior or senior, GED, or high school graduate with minimum high school GPA 2.7, or 9 credit hours of college-level courses with minimum GPA 2.0 or higher

    OR

  • College/ICC student with minimum overall college GPA 2.0 or higher

    AND

  • Complete MATH 096 or 098 with grade of C or higher, or placement into MATH 110 or MATH 115 or higher

  • Requires the Health Science Application

Additional requirements after program acceptance:

  • Submit negative drug screen, negative fingerprint background check, required documentation of physical examination and up to date immunizations

  • Complete Healthcare Provider CPR certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or American Red Cross (ARC) BLS attained and keep it current throughout program

  • Participate in program required registration and orientation meetings

  • Maintain minimum GPA 2.0 and earn a C grade or higher in all courses required within program

Recommendations:

  • High school courses: 4 years English/communication; 2 years algebra; 1 year geometry; 1 year biological science; 1 year chemistry 

  • Before application, schedule an appointment with college health careers student success advisor for help enrolling in required courses

  • Required general education courses from program sequence may be completed with grade C or higher, prior to acceptance/admission into program

  • Opportunities exist for transfer from MLT to University Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) programs - students are encouraged to reach out to program director for information on MLT/MLS articulation and curriculum planning

Additional Program Information

Students seeking to transfer to a 4 year university after completing the MLT program may need to take specific general education courses, such as BIOL 205/206 and CHEM 130/132 in order to fulfill Illinois Articulation Initiative general education requirements. Students should consult their Student Success Advisor for more information on these courses.

Students with Transfer Credit or Completed Degrees

Students who have completed general education courses, or transfer courses that meet program general education requirements, may have an accelerated program option.

Graduation and Board of Certification Examination Eligibility

Once all program requirements are met, students graduate from the MLT program, earn an Associate’s in Applied Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Technician, and are eligible to sit for the National Board of Certification (BOC) Exam of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), to become certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT). Graduation is not contingent upon passing the BOC exam.

Clinical Experiences

Clinical experiences are arranged in laboratories affiliated with ICC to provide student rotations in each department. Such experiences may take place in the Peoria area systems, such as Carle Health or OSF, as well as other affiliated laboratories throughout Central Illinois, such as HSHS and Memorial Health.

To Remain in and Graduate from the Program

  • Earn a grade of C or better in all required general education and required program courses.

  • Maintain an overall GPA 2.0 or better

  • Adhere to program policies on attendance, laboratory safety, professionalism, academic integrity, examination, and student success planning.

  • Adhere to clinical affiliate policies on safety, privacy, compliance, and professionalism.

  • Obtain at least a grade of C or better on the MLT Comprehensive Exam immediately prior to graduation.
