Program Information/Mission

The mission of the Health Information Technology program is to provide knowledge, skills, and professional attitude to prepare students for employment in diverse settings in the Health Information Management career field. Health Information Technology concepts will include but are not limited to coding, data collection, data analysis, electronic health record utilization, legal and ethical aspects, protection of health information, leadership skills, and revenue cycle management.

Admission to Program

Admission requirement:

  • Current high school senior or high school graduate with minimum high school GPA 2.7, or 9 credit hours of college-level courses with minimum overall GPA 2.0

    OR

  • Current college/ICC student with minimum overall college GPA of 2.0 or higher

  • Requires the Health Science Application

 Additional requirements after program acceptance:

  • Provide negative drug screen result, negative fingerprint background check, documentation of required physical exam and immunizations

  • Participate in program registration and orientation meetings

  • Maintain minimum GPA 2.0 and earn GPA 2.0 or higher in all courses required within program

Recommendations:

  • High school courses: two years anatomy, laboratory science, algebra

  • Before application, schedule an appointment with college health careers student success advisor for help enrolling in required courses

  • Required general education courses from program sequence may be completed with grade C or higher, prior to acceptance/admission into program

Additional Program Information

Health Information Technologists work in a variety of healthcare settings, including, but not limited to, hospitals, physician offices, ambulatory care clinics, skilled nursing facilities, billing offices, insurance companies, and government agencies.  

To Remain in and Graduate from the Program

Students must attain a grade of C or better in all coursework to remain in and graduate from program.
